Born in The Netherlands, I am a British Turkish contemporary artist and geometer. My art is deeply influenced by the rich tapestry of geometric patterns from Ottoman and Anatolian Seljuk art and architecture, and Turkish decorative arts as well as patterns from across all Islamic lands.

Adopting centuries-old methods by craftsmen, I analyse and re-construct these patterns with a traditional compass and straight edge. Using my own handmade paints, genuine gold leaf and shell gold serves as a bridge between tradition and contemporary practices. Thus, honouring the heritage of my ancestors, each piece is a dialogue between the past and the present.

Drawing on multicultural identity and journeys, diverse influences and personal memories shape my perspective. Most recently, soundwaves and lyrics travel into my paintings. Particularly influenced by David Bowie, and his ability to reinvent himself through his alter egos, give me the freedom to explore the suppressed aspects of myself from my youth due to cultural restrictions. Hence, in my work Bowie’s magical personas started to float within the unfolding cosmos of patterns and constellations.

My aim is to invite viewers into a space where they can appreciate the beauty and harmony by highlighting the connections of cultural intersections and the stories they tell. By weaving together historical patterns with modern aesthetics and elements of western pop culture references, I strive to create art that fosters connections that transcend geographical and temporal boundaries.
